Therapy FAQ

Why do People go to therapy?

There are many varied reasons why people might look to therapy. Psychological therapy provides a safe space and a supportive relationship to help understand our reactions to different life experiences such as grief, physical health issues, end of relationship or job, changes to life circumstances that cause distress or past abuse issues.
Some people may choose to attend therapy for a brief period, others for longer, it is very individual.
What is important to know is that even if you have chosen to end therapy you are able to come back if needed at any point in the future.

What is therapy?

Therapy is a very personal experience and it is important to use the initial appointment as an opportunity to meet the therapist and to decide if they are the right fit for you. Psychological therapy can provide an opportunity for personal growth with the space to practice new skills for supporting your feelings.
Therapy involves talking and exploring what may at times be difficult or painful information or memories as such the sense of safety within therapy is key.
I will work with you to create a safe space and I will hope to support you to explore any of life’s issues that are causing you distress.

What happens if I meet you outside of therapy?

I will discuss with people at the start of therapy. I will not initiate conversation with those I have supported through therapy, however, if you want to say hello to me, I will always engage with you.

Are sessions private and confidential?

Confidentiality is an important part of psychological therapy. The limits of confidentiality are always explained within the session.
Face to face therapy is conducted in a private room and there will be no interruptions during the session.
For any Online/Remote/Telephone sessions I am in a private space on my own for the duration of the session and would encourage you to find a private space that will not be interrupted for the duration of the session.

How much do sessions cost?

Cost of sessions may vary, please contact me to discuss your needs.

Can I claim for sessions through my health insurance?

I am a Chartered Clinical Psychologist, registered with the Psychological Society of Ireland. Most health insurance that provides cover for mental health will allow you to claim for sessions with me.

How long do sessions last for?

A typical individual session lasts for 50 – 60 minutes. If there was an indication for longer sessions this would be discussed with you.
